Some theoretical results concerning O3-NOx-VOC chemistry and NOx-VOC indicators

چکیده
[1] A series of model results is shown pertaining to ozone, reactive nitrogen (NOy), and peroxides in polluted regions. The results focus on ratios such as O3/NOy and H2O2/HNO3 that have been proposed as indicators for O3-NOx-VOC sensitivity. These ratios are shown to correlate with predicted NOx-VOC sensitivity for a variety of zero-dimensional (0-D) and 3-D models, but the correlation varies in situations ranging from relatively clean to highly polluted. The previously identified NOx-VOC transition values for indicators appear to be valid for moderately polluted conditions with 80–150 ppb O3. Changes in indicator behavior are linked to odd hydrogen chemistry and in particular to changes in the ratio of O3 to primary radical production. Changes in indicator behavior are also correlated with the values of a test ratio, O3/(2H2O2+NOz) which can be evaluated against measurements. Ratios of the form O3/ NOy, representing differences relative to background values, are proposed for analyzing NOx-VOC sensitivity in individual urban plumes. Comparisons are made to extent-of-reaction parameters, which have been proposed for evaluating NOx-VOC sensitivity.

Ozone response to precursor controls in very complex terrains: Use of photochemical indicators to assess O3-NOx-VOC sensitivity in the northeastern Iberian Peninsula
[1] The kinetics of ozone (O3) chemistry and its two main precursors, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOC), represents an important field of uncertainty in atmospheric chemistry and photochemical modeling. This uncertainty affects the design of control strategies to reduce tropospheric O3 production. The effect of controlling ozone precursors on sensitivity regimes was eva...

We use results of a 3-D photochemistry/transport model for ozone formation in Mexico City during events in 1997 to investigate ambient concentrations of reactive nitrogen in relation to ozone-precursor sensitivity. Previous results from other locations suggest that ratios such as O3/NOy and H2O2/HNO3 might provide measurement-based indicators for NOx-sensitive or VOC-sensitive conditions. Mexic...

[1] Probing techniques are useful to provide diagnostic evaluations of air quality models and to indicate the responses of model predictions to changes in emissions. Three probing tools are available in a three-dimensional air quality model, CAMx: the Decoupled Direct Method (DDM), the Ozone Source Attribution Technology (OSAT), and Process Analysis (PA). These tools are evaluated in terms of c...

In airsheds that contain high volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and low NOx (=NO+NO2) concentrations, ozone (O3) production may be significantly suppressed by NOx reactions that lead to the formation of organic nitrates. O3 and its precursors (VOCs and NOx) ambient levels simulated using a regional-scale photochemical model, called Multiscale Air Quality Simulation Platform, are analyzed and co...
